The author, heard of the Division of Studies in Forest Economics at the Instituto Nacional do Pinho, examined the movement of timber prices in Brazil during the decade 1939 to 1948. With the exception of quotations for sawn Parana Pine consumed in the city of Sao Paulo, there existed no statistics of prices covering this period. Therefore, as a first step, the author proved a statistical correlation between the (already known) series relating to the average local alues, in terms of money, as declared by sellers in connection with export, and the series showing actual prices of sales to the exterior computed by the Instituto Nacional do Pinho for the last two years. On the strength of this correlation, the author undertook to study the movement of prices of timber during the past decade, using export and coastal shipping statistics besides such specific data as were available. |
